Announcing our American Short Fiction Contest Winners!

The Editors

every_girl_pulling_for_victory_wwi_poster_1918We are delighted to announce that Victor LaValle has chosen the winners of our 2016 American Short Fiction Contest.

The first-place prize goes to Amanda Emil Anderson, for her story “The Goodnow Guide.” Look out for the story in an upcoming issue of American Short Fiction!

Amanda Emil Anderson is a writer from Vermont. Her fiction has appeared in Sonora Review. She has an MFA from Emerson College and is the recipient of a Vermont Studio Center fellowship.

The second-place prize goes to Christina Ward-Niven, for her story “June 25th.”

Christina Ward-Niven holds degrees in American Literature and Journalism. She’s worked previously as a writer/editor for nonprofits and corporations in the Washington, D.C. area, and she is currently pursuing an MFA through Warren Wilson College’s Program for Writers. Christina lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with her spouse, two young daughters, and a pair of charming yet seriously unruly dogs.

Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to Victor LaValle for his terrific judgement!

Four years on as director of Texas’s annual literary award for incarcerated writers, some of the names written across the bloated white and manila envelopes have grown familiar—essayists, short story writers, and the places they are relegated to calling “home”.
