ASF Goes Back to School: Back Issues for the College Classroom

by ASF Editors | August 19, 2019

back to school collage of ASF coversIn recent years, we shipped over 300 free back issues of American Short Fiction to colleges and universities including Rowan University, the University of Iowa, the University of Wisconsin, Towson University, Missouri State University, and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. If you’re a creative writing instructor who’s teaching a workshop at a U.S. college or university this fall, we’d be happy to send you a box of back issues to use in your classroom. These could be a teaching tool, or a little bonus for your hard working creative writing students, or something to share with your colleagues. The choice is yours! Supplies are limited, though, and once these back issues are gone, they’re gone. Take a peek at the rules and guidelines, and drop us a note if you’d like to give your students the gift of short fiction this fall.

“Memories are a nuisance,” Peter wrote to one of our writers after reading his short story, “but nonetheless they seem to make us who we are, as this story confirms.” This year’s submissions told many stories burdened with memory, but just as many stared bravely into the face of hope, satirized the state of politics, speculated on the future of the world, or else built entirely new worlds to inhabit. In short, the stories written on the inside reflected the stories we wrote this year on the outside. Stories of human toil and dreams and everything in between.
