THE STARS AT NIGHT 2016

THE STARS AT NIGHT 2016

screen-shot-2016-09-29-at-8-38-19-pm

Please note that this event has passed. Please visit our Stars at Night page for information about this year’s event.

Join us on the night of Thursday, November 3rd, for the first annual The Stars at Night, a beer-and-boots gala celebrating ASF’s 25th anniversary, our Texas heritage, and our city’s writers and those who champion them.

Come for the country songs and dancing, and stay for the free cocktails, light snacks, and the bright view of the city skyline. This year we are thrilled to recognize two literary stars: Karan Mahajan for his novel The Association of Small Bombs and Deb Olin Unferth for her admirable civic contributions, in particular for her work with writers who are incarcerated in the Texas prison system.

The event will run from 7.30 till 11pm. Online ticket sales have now closed, but you can still grab your tickets at the door!

All proceeds go toward funding American Short Fiction‘s mission to support and promote the literary arts and writers, and to offer more opportunities to enjoy literature in our community. It will be a grand old countrified kick-off to a wonderful Texas Book Festival weekend in Austin.

HAPPY 25TH BIRTHDAY TO US!

We would like to thank our sponsors: The Writers’ League of Texas, Kirkus Reviews, the Austin Public Library Friends Foundation, BookPeople, The Writing Barn, Little Mule Studio, the Austin American-Statesman, Kelly West Photography, Zax Restaurant and Bar, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Big Bend Brewing Company, and Tequila 512. Contact editors@americanshortfiction.org for more information on sponsorship opportunities.

We consider it our privilege to have spent time with so many terrific submissions—thank you for giving us the opportunity to read your work. Congratulations to the winners!
Read the Winners of the 2025 Insider Prize Whose voices are these, I wonder each fall as submissions for the Insider Prize begin accumulating in my office. Four years on as director of Texas’s annual literary award for incarcerated writers, some of the names written across the bloated white and manila envelopes have grown familiar—essayists, short story writers, and the places they are relegated to calling “home”.
Announcing the Winners of the 2025 American Short(er) Fiction Prize We are delighted to announce that Tony Tulathimutte has chosen the winners of our 2025 American Short(er) Fiction Contest. Thank you to our judge and to everyone who submitted—it is always inspiring to read your work. Congratulations to the winners!
