As we continue our year-end giving campaign, we want to take this opportunity to look back with gratitude for all that our readers, authors, staff, and supporters have helped American Short Fiction accomplish.
So far this year, we’ve published 21 writers in our gorgeously designed literary journals and online exclusives, paying our writers competitive rates for their work and promoting them at events in Austin and around the country. We’ve published dozens of author interviews, reviews, and features on our website, and have attended conferences and festivals in Tampa, New York City, Washington, DC, and elsewhere. Back home in Austin, we hosted half a dozen literary events, including an amazing evening of Literaoke, a hilarious and high-brow night of fun at Lit Crawl Austin as part of the Texas Book Festival, a beat-the-heat summer reading at an ice cream parlor, and our third annual Stars at Night showcase, which celebrated the work of Laura van den Berg, Elizabeth McCracken, S. Kirk Walsh, and Fernando A. Flores.
In recent months, we launched our second annual contest for writers incarcerated in Texas prisons called The Insider Prize, which will be judged this year by Joyce Carol Oates and will, for the first time, offer a monetary prize. We also hosted two additional contests, one for short stories and the other for flash fiction.
At American Short Fiction, we know that reading and writing are transformative acts and that literature has the power to change the way we see ourselves, our world, and our place in it.
Donate today to help us bring important stories to our communities, provide literary opportunities for writers and readers, and support writers in all stages of their careers. We’re excited to do even more in 2019, and we hope you’ll join us to make that possible!
